Earthquake in Japan: insurance companies are suffering a severe impact

Following the floods in Australia, New Zealand earthquake and now the earthquake in Japan, the invoice from reinsurers looks very high for the first months of the year.

The massive earthquake followed by tsunami in Japan is the second disaster faced in a very short time, insurance companies, and beaten less than a month by the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand.

On Friday, shares of European reinsurers fell into the bags: a half day, the German Munich Re and Hannover Re lost about 5% each in Frankfurt, as Swiss Re in Zurich, while French sank deeper Scor 7% in the Paris market.

A 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Friday, followed by numerous aftershocks and tsunamis, generating warnings across the Pacific, leaving hundreds dead.

"After the floods in Australia (early years), the earthquake in New Zealand (late February) and now the earthquake in Japan, the reinsurers bill looks very high for the first months of the year" according to a specialist sector requiring anonymity.

Reinsurers will be "much affected" by the catastrophe that primary insurers, because its function is precisely to cover insurers, reminded the Christian Muschick AFP, German private bank analyst Silvia Quandt.

The first global reinsurer, Germany's Munich Re, "can finally bury their performance objectives for the current year," he said.

On Thursday, Munich Re said it would not get in 2011 expected net profit of 2,400 million euros if the impact of natural disasters reveals higher than expected.

Swiss Re, the second global reinsurer, Scor and France also made it known that it was too early to give figures on the financial consequences of catastrophe.

According to a note by the brokerage JPMorgan Cazenove, the cost associated with the earthquake in Japan could be between 1,000 and 2,000 million dollars only for European reinsurers, although it is an estimate "very preliminary."

"It's a big earthquake, but the damage is obviously less important than those caused by the Kobe earthquake in 1995, because the epicenter was at sea, and close to a less populated Muschick said.
In 1995, the Kobe earthquake cost U.S. $ 3,500 million to the insurance industry and had a total cost of U.S. $ 100,000 million, according to Swiss Re caused more than 6,400 victims.

As California, Japan is "well prepared" for this type of disaster, and reinsurers are careful to limit and diversify their risks in these regions, said Muschick, which predicts a rise in reinsurance rates.

Therefore, this type of disaster means "higher income a year or two later," said JP Morgan Cazenove.

In 2010, natural disasters and were very costly to the insurance industry: about U.S. $ 37,000 million, according to Munich Re
